Five signs your accounting system is quietly costing you money

Most finance teams do not fail because people are careless. They fail because the system underneath them was never designed for the volume, the locations or the reporting cadence the business now runs on.
The first sign is the reconciliation backlog. When bank and ledger reconciliations slip past two weeks, the numbers being used for decisions are already historical fiction.
The second is the spreadsheet workaround. Every workaround is an undocumented process living on one laptop. When that person travels, the close stops.
The third is the chart of accounts nobody trusts. If management reporting requires manual regrouping every month, the chart of accounts was designed for bookkeeping, not for decisions.
The fourth is multi-location drift, where each site posts differently. The fifth is the audit scramble. If your year-end audit is a fire drill, your controls are being reconstructed rather than operated.
Each of these is fixable in weeks, not years — usually through a chart of accounts redesign, a controls template and a proper go-live plan.
